About this tour

Nzulezo is a village built entirely on stilts above Lake Amansuri, in Ghana's far southwest. About 600 people live in raised wooden houses connected by long plank walkways, all anchored into the lakebed. There's no road in โ€” you reach it only by canoe, paddled an hour through a mangrove channel that opens onto the lake. It's on UNESCO's tentative list and feels like a country of its own.

Highlights

โœ“
The mangrove canoe approach
An hour of paddling through a quiet green tunnel โ€” kingfishers, monkeys, dragonflies.
โœ“
Walk the stilt boardwalk
600 m of raised plank streets through the village โ€” homes, school, church, palm-wine bar.
โœ“
Local lunch on the lake
Akple with smoked freshwater fish, prepared by a village cooperative.
โœ“
Founder myth & chief visit
The Mwenue ancestors are said to have followed a snail to the site. Hear the story from the elder.
โœ“
Direct community benefit
Entry fees and the lunch fee go directly to the village development fund.
โœ“
Sunset return paddle
The same mangrove channel, but with golden light through the leaves.

Common questions

Is the canoe stable? โ–พ

Yes โ€” these are stable working canoes with experienced paddlers. Life-jackets are mandatory. The water is calm; no swell.

Can I take photos in the village? โ–พ

Of the village, yes. Of individual people, ask first โ€” your guide will help. A small tip (โ‚ต5โ€“โ‚ต20) for photo subjects is appreciated.

Wet season vs dry? โ–พ

Both run. The lake level rises in the wet season (Mayโ€“Sep), pushing the channel a little wider; dry season (Octโ€“Apr) means easier paddling and clearer skies. Bring a light shell either way.
