Three days in Amboseli National Park — the photographer's safari, where huge elephant herds cross open savannah with snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them. Cynthia Moss has studied these elephants here since 1972 — they're the most well-documented elephant population on earth. Drive from Nairobi (4 hrs) or fly in (45 min). Maasai cultural visit on day 2.
"Three elephant families crossing the plain at dawn, Kili sharp in the background — we cried. Our guide Joseph knew exactly where to position the vehicle."
"Maasai boma was the surprise — fair-pay, not staged, our host's mother gave my daughter a beaded bracelet she still wears."
Mara for predator density + migration (Aug-Oct). Amboseli for elephants + the Kili shot. Both is the classic combo — see our Maasai Mara safari.
Clearest at dawn (5:30-8:00) and golden hour. Cloud often covers by mid-morning. Jan-Feb and Jun-Sep are the clearest months.
Drive (4 hr) is fine on the new tar road. Fly (45 min from Wilson) saves a day. Cost-equivalent for 2 people.
