Two halves. One night in Stone Town — UNESCO labyrinth of coral-rag walls, carved zanzibari doors, Swahili-Arab-Indian-Persian-British layers stacked into a single town. Dinner at Forodhani night market, jazz under stars at the House of Wonders. Then a transfer north to Kendwa — the white-sand, tide-friendly beach that doesn't go to mudflats at low tide — or east to Paje for the kite-surfers. Spice farm tour on the way, dhow sail to a sandbar lunch, snorkel at Mnemba reef. Pair it with a Serengeti safari and you have the full Tanzania.
"Stone Town's smell of cloves, the call to prayer at sunset, dhow sail to a sandbar that vanished an hour later. Best beach week of my life."
"We paired this with the Serengeti — game drives one week, white sand the next. Tanzania does both better than anywhere I've been."
Kendwa is our default — northwest tip, white sand, no mudflats at low tide, sunset side. Nungwi is right next door, more bars and resort scale. Paje (east coast) is for kite-surfers and quieter beach yoga retreats. Tell us at booking — same price.
June–October (dry, cool) and December–February (hot, dry) are the sweet spots. April–May and November are the rainy seasons — heavy short bursts, hotels cheaper. Avoid April if possible.
Yes — this is the classic pairing. Add 4 nights Serengeti + Ngorongoro for $2,890/pp · fly ZNZ → ARK directly. Full 10-day Bush & Beach package from $4,190/pp.
Zanzibar is majority Muslim. In Stone Town and outside the beach resorts, cover shoulders and knees (women and men). On the beach you're in normal swimwear, no problem. Ramadan visits are fine but restaurants close during daylight.
Very safe by African beach standards. Petty theft on the beach exists — leave valuables in your room. Tap water not drinkable — bottled water provided throughout. Malaria-risk: take prophylaxis.
