Four days in the Simien Mountains, UNESCO World Heritage and Ethiopia's most-photographed landscape β a wall of 1,000m drops, jagged peaks above 4,000m, and endemic gelada baboons (sometimes called bleeding-heart monkeys) in troops of hundreds grazing the cliff edge. The walking is moderate (we don't summit Ras Dashen, the highest peak, but reach 3,950m). Light fly-in to Gondar, then a 3-hour drive into the park.
"Standing at Imet Gogo with 200 gelada baboons grazing 5 metres away and 1,000m of nothing below us β I have never felt smaller or more lucky."
"Our scout Worku spoke no English and was the best company. Pointed at every bird, drew the route in the dirt at every break."
Highest point 3,926m. Most trekkers feel mild altitude on day 1 β light headache, slow pace. The camps at 3,250m and 3,620m let you acclimate. No serious AMS reported in our last 200 trips, but pre-trip aerobic fitness helps.
Yes β most clients pair our Lalibela rock churches with this. Combined 8 days, $3,290/pp.
